Dad hit a kangaroo on the way home. The roo was a big male, about 7 feet tall. Mum and Dad are lucky the animal bounced right over the top and didn't come through the windscreen.

They're okay, but the ute and the kangaroo are totalled.

Well, bugger. But the company needed a new truck anyway. Now the accountant will let us buy it.

No roo bar?

I've never seen a ute without a roo bar win. Sometimes both the ute and the roo lose.

Sorry to hear about the up close connection with the kangaroo. Very glad to hear your parents are OK!

Bottom line: Your folks are OK.

There are only "one" (set) of your parents; there are millions of roos.

Be glad your parents came out on top (and that the wayward roo went "over the top"---)

BTW, what kind of truck was that? GM, Ford, Izusu, etc.?

tis a Holden Rodeo (rebaged Izusu light truck, not sure what they call 'em in the US or Japan)

Batty, might be an idea to make sure that the NEXT ute has a roobar on it, cos y'know, Those roos are damn scary at the best of times, when they're coming at you at a fair rate of speed, Ouch

Glad that yer mum'n dad are okay though *nods*

Tell that to the roo's offspring. ;)

Seriously, though, while it's sad to hit critters on the road (other than prarie dogs...), it's a relief that your parents are ok, Batty.

Is the truck really in that bad of shape? It looks to me like the only damage is to the hood. Or did the whole engine compartment slide back a bit?

Have the best

It's an Izuzu light truck - a "one tonner." This is a 8 year old Rodeo. The new models look like this (http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/action/modeloverview?modelid=9006)

It's done almost 500,000km and was well overdue for replacement.

Kangaroos are like deer with barrels of sand strapped to their legs. They're much more bottom-heavy, and hitting them causes a lot more damage to vehicles.

Looks like your folks were very lucky not to have been injured. I'm sorry about the roo collision but I'm very happy no one else got hurt. It looks like roos carry about the same weight as ploughing into a seven point buck back home.

Full-grown males stand 2m (7 feet) high and weigh 100kg+ (220 pounds)

"Pounds" is probably a good measurement for kangaroos.

One of my friends in South Australia has a permanently wonky knee from his meeting with a kangaroo, but then, he was doing 110 at night on back roads and was on his motorcycle.

I'm glad that your folks are OK. That really reminds me of what that deer did to my car, when it got hit while my dad was driving. I wonder what kind of underlying damage there is under the hood, it might not be all that "totaled" after all. Then again, a new vehicle does sound nice.

Anyway, I'm glad that Roo didn't go through the windshield, or windscreen I guess. I'm glad that your parents are all right.

Date: 27 Jul 2005 00:38 (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com
"Roo through the windscreen" is the usual scenario. This bloke actually creased the roof of the truck as he went over the top so it was a near thing. He was probably on an upward bounce when they hit.

Left and right mudguards are pushed back to make it hard to open the doors, the radiator is pushed back but not enough to hit the fan, and the A/C is totalled. meh. it's winter. There are no fluid leaks, the battery and electrics are still okay but the headlights a spotting for possums now.

The truck is 8 years old and has done 400,000km. Could be a write-off on economic grounds. (And a new truck would be nice. 8) )

The important thing is that Mum and Dad are okay, if a little shaken.
