Dad hit a kangaroo on the way home. The roo was a big male, about 7 feet tall. Mum and Dad are lucky the animal bounced right over the top and didn't come through the windscreen.

They're okay, but the ute and the kangaroo are totalled.

Well, bugger. But the company needed a new truck anyway. Now the accountant will let us buy it.

Ouch. Too bad about the 'roo and the truck, but I'm glad your parental units are okay.

No roo bar?

I've never seen a ute without a roo bar win. Sometimes both the ute and the roo lose.

Sorry to hear about the up close connection with the kangaroo. Very glad to hear your parents are OK!

Bottom line: Your folks are OK.

There are only "one" (set) of your parents; there are millions of roos.

Be glad your parents came out on top (and that the wayward roo went "over the top"---)

BTW, what kind of truck was that? GM, Ford, Izusu, etc.?

tis a Holden Rodeo (rebaged Izusu light truck, not sure what they call 'em in the US or Japan)

Batty, might be an idea to make sure that the NEXT ute has a roobar on it, cos y'know, Those roos are damn scary at the best of times, when they're coming at you at a fair rate of speed, Ouch

Glad that yer mum'n dad are okay though *nods*

OUCH!

Just like hitting a deer- extremely dangerous!

Glad your folks are all right!

Looks like your folks were very lucky not to have been injured. I'm sorry about the roo collision but I'm very happy no one else got hurt. It looks like roos carry about the same weight as ploughing into a seven point buck back home.

Ouch. Lucky they weren't injured, that could've easily been much worse...

Yeeesh.

One of my friends in South Australia has a permanently wonky knee from his meeting with a kangaroo, but then, he was doing 110 at night on back roads and was on his motorcycle.

Kangaroos are like deer with barrels of sand strapped to their legs. They're much more bottom-heavy, and hitting them causes a lot more damage to vehicles.

for the loss of another rare creature in this world, there are so few creatures like that roo.

Crazy thing is, here in the US a LOT of trucks and SUVs have "bars" on the front (some functional; some merely "tough-looking"), but for a good percentage of them, they're never exposed to potential rural "critter encounters"---only the ever-growing population of urban pedestrians...

Most of those are fat, soft and at best will only crack a windshield. The old ones, however, move slowly enough that even a novice driver can "score a kill" with only a minimum of driving prowness...

Bunting an athletic one of breeding age, though, garners the most points, and oftentimes takes exceptional skill---

"Pre-breeding age" targets are off-limits, and bagging one of those gets you ejected from the game (and buried UNDER the jail---)

Ciao!

Tell that to the roo's offspring. ;)

Seriously, though, while it's sad to hit critters on the road (other than prarie dogs...), it's a relief that your parents are ok, Batty.

Is the truck really in that bad of shape? It looks to me like the only damage is to the hood. Or did the whole engine compartment slide back a bit?

Have the best

It's an Izuzu light truck - a "one tonner." This is a 8 year old Rodeo. The new models look like this (http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/action/modeloverview?modelid=9006)

It's done almost 500,000km and was well overdue for replacement.

roo bar / bull bar

here is a move to have bull bars banned from city vehicles. Can't think why.

From what I've heard about the upcoming European "pedestrian friendly" vehicle requirments, autos (don't know about trucks) for the 2007 model year will have to have special, specific "pedestrian friendly" front-end structures to minimize injuries to wayward walkers when they get mowed down by vehicles. This will completely eliminate some sports cars, and cause radical redesigns on many others.

Whacking some j-walking bozo with a big "bull bar-sporting" truck would, no doubt, spoil said bozo's day--- *evil grin*

BTW, I *like* the bars that ARB sells! Those are the "real deal", unlike some of the "for looks only" rigs many trucks and SUVs -- usually the ones that never leave the pavement -- sport over here.

I don't think much of those crappy, fake 'bars'

gotta be bolted Firmly to the chassis for me to even THINK that it's a good thing

But then again, you get the bogans, in their utes, with the Mack Truck Bullbars, and it just looks wrong, Really Really Wrong..

Bottom-heavy's -good-. It'll cause more damage to the vehicle, but it seems to me that it'd be less likely to wind up in your lap.
