I normally can get it to zoom down so that the full screen display is just a few blocks, but it's not working right now...
Satellite Maps
Date: 2 Jul 2005 18:17 (UTC)My map shows a typical California subdivision (built in 1959) with almost no greenery except for grass and small trees:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=140+Candy+Street,Bakersfield,+California,+USA&ll=35.356160,-119.050899&spn=0.004699,0.004420&t=k&hl=en
That's the most detailed it gets. Zoomed a little further out, you can see the major freeways:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=140+Candy+Street,Bakersfield,+California,+USA&ll=35.356160,-119.050899&spn=0.004699,0.004420&t=k&hl=en
Obvious in this zoomed-out version is the American River. It's the American River on which gold was discovered in 1849 (giving the name "49'ers" to prospectors. All the gold made Califorina rich enough that it attained Statehood on the "fast track" in 1850. A curious bit of trivia? California began as a Republic (in fact, the flag says "California Republic" at the bottom, under the walking grizzly bear). Unlike Texas and Arizona, which furst went from Republic to Territory before becoming a State, we skipped the Territory part and went directly from Republic to State!

Dubbo
Date: 2 Jul 2005 19:41 (UTC)My ears perked up so far on hearing the name that there are a couple of small holes in the ceiling.
