Head injury caused by magpie attack. He had a scalp injury and I could see the skull through the cut. He was rather subdued when I picked him up, as you would expect, but 3 months R&R at the Owl Lady's farm fixed him, and he was released into the bush.

You have the *cutest* birds in your corner of the globe!

This one looks like an exceedingly fluffy rendition of an owl. Is it?

Frogmouths are related to owls and nightjars, and are nocturnal. They're a visual hunter rather than listen for prey like owls, so you see them in open woodlands more than forests.

*grin* Okay, settle a bet between my husband and I...is this an adolescent, or do the adults really look floofy and huge-mouthed like that?

He's a "young adult" ie almost fully grown. And the adults do look this floofy and big-mouthed. This is why they're called "frogmouths." I don't know where the "tawny" comes into it; they're all shades of grey.

It's funny how you get used to the weirdness when you see a lot of it about. Frogmouths are cute but not weird to me.

Don't think we have anything like that around here. Cute critter, I'm glad it survived the attack. I HATE magpies...vicious, nasty creatures.

Magpies here are a different species, and tend to be aggressive only during the breeding season.

Maybe we need someone just like Den in North America to take the pictures? =)
