Port Macquarie grey headed flying fox colony leaves its roost at twilight. There are about 50,000 bats in the colony.

I suppose that's why they're likened to foxes, as opposed to rodents. o_o

Indeed, being as they're also unlike rodents.

And they're the medium-sized megabats. There are a few species that are largers.

I wish we had bats like that around here. Not that I don't like our wee bats, but, you know, FLYING FOXES.

Pretty cool, though I'd hate to have a bat that big dive bombing my swimming pool. :)

Yay bats!! Wonderful photos.

I posted a link a couple of days ago in my LJ; bats in North America are having problems. :( You can find the story here (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080321.wbatdisease0321/BNStory/Science/home). Poor batses. :(

I saw a whole pile of flying foxes sleeping in the trees in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney before I left... It's hard to photograph them when they're in the trees and have them look like bats unless you catch them in a wing stretch.
