No matter where you are in Australia you are never more than 1000 kilometres from the ocean.

The value's slightly lower for Singapore, but yes. :p

(Granted our beaches are nowhere near as good, which defeats the point of having an ocean nearby)

And slightly less from something poisonous.

If you're lucky.

It's that kind of place.

Don't forget about the crocodiles, sharks and sea wasps! Even the oceans ain't safe.

When in trouble, when in doubt: Run in circles, scream and shout! :D

It's worse than I thought - even your barmaids are poisonous!

"Melbourne barmaid Emily Craig, 23, served a client a single 30ml shot glass of Pine-O-Cleen disinfectant in March during a 6 a.m. drinking bout at Evolution Nightclub, causing him to become violently ill, the Melbourne Magistrates court was told."

*snickers.* Paul is grumbling about people having told me just how many things in Australia will be perfectly happy to kill me if I come across them the wrong way. I think he's afraid I'm going to change my mind about moving.

Oh, Hush.:D
I'm stuck in the landlocked midwest. I'll be lucky if I get to Florida again this year.
Hopefully mombirdie will be well enough to go.

Since I live less than 2 miles (as the proverbial crow flies) from the Atlantic Ocean (and nowhere in Florida is all that far from salt water of some sort), I can only say: "Meh..."

*hehehe!!!*

In Britain you're never more than 30 miles from the sea...
and probably a lot less from a queue for something.

I was going to say, in Britain you're never more than 1000 km from any other part of Britain never mind the sea. :)

(Seriously I didn't entirely understand the original post... it's a joke about how australia is so ridiculously big, arid etc?)

Oh no! Holbrook is RIGHT on the sea!

Winnipeg is about as far as you can possibly get from an ocean in Canada. Upside: no danger of hurricanes or tidal waves!

I'm 400km from the sea. Plus, I don't get snow.

It does get a bit hot in Summer, though.

Google says we're 1004km from Churchill, MB, which is our closest ocean-access port (on the Hudson Bay).

Don't forget that's road miles, so you're likely a good bit closer as the crow flies when it sober!

Nope, that's straight line. There *are* no roads going into Churchill... You either have to take the train (which is out of service often because the tracks heave on the permafrost) or fly. :)

That's the beauty of living on an island, I suppose, even the world's largest one.

Still, give me a mountain any day.

Hurmmm I'd have thought that in general the diameter of the continent (which while not 'round' per se is roundish), would be greater than 2000 km - but apparently I'm wrong...
