Paris Hilton became famous when she taped herself having sex and let the video get on the internet. Being from the Hilton family (the one with the hotels) was enough to make this newsworthy. Thus was launched her career as a "socialite" (i.e. a spoiled rich girl with no talent for anything but staying famous).

From this came her TV career on the reality show "The Simple Life", the premise of which is to make her and another spoiled rich girl try to do things that normal people have to do all the time, like work or clean, and watch them give up when it overloads their delicate little minds.

She got media attention once (I think for the sex tape?), and it was noticed that she exemplifies a perfect combination of an enviable life and a complete personal train wreck the likes of which celebrity obsessions are born. It's one part hope that glitz and glamour are attainable by money alone and that this requisite money is still attainable in America today, and one part self-justification in one's un-glitzy and unglamourous life because, look, having it all clearly does not make this person suck any less or be any happier. Not that I think most people that pay her any mind think it through.

I wasn't aware that she was. I don't know anything about her other than the fact her name appeared on the cover of a video in the triple X rated "celebrity" section of a book shop in Penrith some years ago.

I understand from the telly she's going to prison for 3 weeks.
