I'm on Rescue Phone today. My first call today:

Caller: Do you trap birds?
Me: Only if they're injured, in danger or a threat.
C: I have an eagle who is a threat.
M: (Thinks: Hawk killing chickens) What sort of eagle?
C: A wedge-tail!
M: oh? How is that a threat?
C: The bastard is killing my Chihuahuas!
M: (stunned silence)
C: It dropped into my back yard and killed one of my dogs! I want you to get rid of it!

I took the details and, after I stopped laughing, phoned our raptor handlers in Trangie. I prefaced my explaination of the situation with "Now, don't laugh, ok?" and told him. After he stopped laughing he said the eagle must be VERY hungry to be attacking prey animals so close to houses. Apparently on the coast Very Small Dogs are lost to sea eagles and pelicans, but this is the first time I've heard first hand of it happening. The Raptor People in Trangie are going to organize trapping the relocating the bird.

I know I shouldn't laugh. I know the lady is traumatized by the eagle killing her pets. I know I'm being a cruel bastard and I feel guilty. But... an eagle killed and ate a Chihuahua. At least it was quick.

The only way this could be more amusing is if it was a poodle.

Those things are called "barking rats" around here.

Can't STAND 'em---!

Yorkies, however, (if raised properly!) are an absolute HOOT. Personable, and look like little animated mops...until you get one wet, and then it just looks PATHETIC--- HAHAHA!!!

Any canine that you could flush with a minimum of plunging isn't, in my opinion, a dog.

I have a tender sport for Sydney Silkies, which are about the same size and hairyness as a yorkie. Scruffy is 1/2 Silkie and 1/2 Maltese, and his mum was 100% Silky. She could kill rats and feral cats in a few seconds. Scruffy's malteseness makes him pretty useless for killing rodents but he hates cats.

*cracks up* Chihuahua Stew, anyone?

Aren't poodles bigger? I get the thought that eagles couldn't pick up something that heavy. Or are Wedge Tails huge.

Wedge-tails have a 6 to 7 foot wingspan. They generally eat their kills on the spot.

I saw one in a fauna park that had landed to eat some roo roadkill (or maybe a fresh smaller kill, but I think it was roadkill) on the road up to Woomera, stuffed itself solid, then tried to lift off as a truck went by, wobbled across the road, and was hit. It had brain damage, so it lives in a fauna park in Crystal Brook (SA) now.

Poodles (also known as "piddles") range in size from "regular dog" to "toy", and I absolutely HATE the "toy" piddles. Obnoxious, absurd-looking little shitters...

Eh... far as I'm concerned, only when they're stupidly shaved. A poodle with all its hair, even a toy poodle, can be a very nice dog.

It should have been quick for the poor eagle. Lucky for it, Mexican food tends to go right through you...

I know it's not funny but put that way, I'd be laughing too.

That's why we don't leave the cats or the dogs out around here. If you do, they're not likely to be where you left them...what's left of them.
