Call Of The Wild

I'm on Rescue Phone today. My first call today:

Caller: Do you trap birds?
Me: Only if they're injured, in danger or a threat.
C: I have an eagle who is a threat.
M: (Thinks: Hawk killing chickens) What sort of eagle?
C: A wedge-tail!
M: oh? How is that a threat?
C: The bastard is killing my Chihuahuas!
M: (stunned silence)
C: It dropped into my back yard and killed one of my dogs! I want you to get rid of it!

I took the details and, after I stopped laughing, phoned our raptor handlers in Trangie. I prefaced my explaination of the situation with "Now, don't laugh, ok?" and told him. After he stopped laughing he said the eagle must be VERY hungry to be attacking prey animals so close to houses. Apparently on the coast Very Small Dogs are lost to sea eagles and pelicans, but this is the first time I've heard first hand of it happening. The Raptor People in Trangie are going to organize trapping the relocating the bird.

I know I shouldn't laugh. I know the lady is traumatized by the eagle killing her pets. I know I'm being a cruel bastard and I feel guilty. But... an eagle killed and ate a Chihuahua. At least it was quick.

The only way this could be more amusing is if it was a poodle.

Obviously you and I share our opinion of small yappy 'not really dogs dogs'

Those things are called "barking rats" around here.

Can't STAND 'em---!

Yorkies, however, (if raised properly!) are an absolute HOOT. Personable, and look like little animated mops...until you get one wet, and then it just looks PATHETIC--- HAHAHA!!!

Any canine that you could flush with a minimum of plunging isn't, in my opinion, a dog.

Spit take!

I'm totally telling my dad that, just to hear him cackle.

I have a tender sport for Sydney Silkies, which are about the same size and hairyness as a yorkie. Scruffy is 1/2 Silkie and 1/2 Maltese, and his mum was 100% Silky. She could kill rats and feral cats in a few seconds. Scruffy's malteseness makes him pretty useless for killing rodents but he hates cats.

*cracks up* Chihuahua Stew, anyone?

Aren't poodles bigger? I get the thought that eagles couldn't pick up something that heavy. Or are Wedge Tails huge.

Wedge-tails have a 6 to 7 foot wingspan. They generally eat their kills on the spot.

I wish I could help and learn how you do things... I need a job. :P Any openings down there if you're willing to give me a spot to crash? [/stupid whine]

This is true for practically all wildlife rehabbers.

[identity profile] mactavish.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I saw one in a fauna park that had landed to eat some roo roadkill (or maybe a fresh smaller kill, but I think it was roadkill) on the road up to Woomera, stuffed itself solid, then tried to lift off as a truck went by, wobbled across the road, and was hit. It had brain damage, so it lives in a fauna park in Crystal Brook (SA) now.

Poodles (also known as "piddles") range in size from "regular dog" to "toy", and I absolutely HATE the "toy" piddles. Obnoxious, absurd-looking little shitters...

[identity profile] hespa.livejournal.com 2005-05-22 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Eh... far as I'm concerned, only when they're stupidly shaved. A poodle with all its hair, even a toy poodle, can be a very nice dog.

[identity profile] weyrdbird.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
(falls over laughing) :D

Dang it! I was eating TimTams and having a nice cup of rooibos tea and now I have to clean the monitor *again!*

I wonder if the chihuahua was eaten with tortillas and salsa.. I am sick.. It's a good thing the lady didnt have fluffy bunnies.. She would be having kittens

[identity profile] stoda.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
It would probably eat the kittens too. :>

[identity profile] beki.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Nahh.. it would use the claws to clean its beak.. yeah thats the ticket...

sick I tell you.. sick I am

My daughter and I both had the same thought.....

"What will they use for bait?"

Hopefully it's not the obvious answer! :)

...an eagle killed and ate a Chihuahua. At least it was quick.

It should have been quick for the poor eagle. Lucky for it, Mexican food tends to go right through you...

[identity profile] walkertxkitty.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's not funny but put that way, I'd be laughing too.

That's why we don't leave the cats or the dogs out around here. If you do, they're not likely to be where you left them...what's left of them.

[identity profile] d-d-d.livejournal.com 2005-03-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)

As far as I'm concerned, raptors can eat all the Chihuahuas and Pekingeses they want.

Hate. Hate. HATE little rat-dogs! Grrrrrrrr!

[identity profile] weyrdbird.livejournal.com 2005-03-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Now that would make for a tradgedy of epic proportions on The Osbournes!

"Mummy's little foo-foo got eaten by what?! I'll rip the owner's eyes out!!"

:D

Where was this wedgie when I lived next door to a Chihuahua that would work itself into frothing fits every time the mailman came, even if it was the same mailman who had been coming every day there was mail delivery for the last several years?

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2005-03-06 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
The worry now is the people shooting the bird before it can be trapped.
