I've just picked up a baby bearded dragon. He's a cute little thing just 6" long, 3" of that is his tail. When he gets grumpy he flares out his tiny little beard and entirely fails to look scary.

A cat bit him. THere is a nasty cut on his belly. Tomorrow I'll take him to the zoovets.

If he survives the night, that is.

(that's interesting. I have no user pictures.)

I hope he makes it!

Bearded dragons

I seem to recall that those were all the rage a few decades ago in Japan. The Japanese had t-shirts, a goofy-looking dance, plastic dragons that you could "walk" on a stick (the beard flared open and shut as it "walked," and even real pet dragons. Don't they run upright when frightened?

the frilled dragons run upright. Bearded dragons are strictly quadrupeds. They have a little 1/2 frill (the beard) under their chin which flares out in a thread display.

My sister brought be a frilled dragon shirt from Japan, where she was an exchange student. She figured it was a good compromise between my AFS experience and her own.

I've handled one of them before... it was one of the first reptiles I did anything with. Very cool, I hope he gets better.

Friend of mine rescued a bearded dragon that someone had either lost or let go deliberately (Florida is a haven for exotic species alas) - they named him Oolong. Oolong is now a spoiled dragon with fresh veggies daily and regular vet checkups.

They may look fierce but they are still infinks.

Aww, cute lizard. A friend of mine with the Reptile and Amphibian Rescue Network has a couple of them. Very alert, and they practically purr when you pet them.

Wild ones don't purr: they hiss and bite. Luckily they don't have starp teeth. They also flatten out their bodies until they look like discs, and all their spines stick out everywhere. It's all bluff, of course. They'd rather run away .

I don't know if the ones in captivity can change colour, but the wild ones do to maximize sun-soaking. They go from a very dark grey and fade up to a yellowy-grey as they get warmer.

I was talking about my friend's pets, not bearded dragons in general. Which are still really nice lizards, of course. Somehow there's something awfully cute about a critter the size of your hand displaying "Look at me, I'm big and dangerous" for all it's worth. :-> (And then there was the kingsnake I once found all coiled up in a little-frequented public restroom, frantically trying to convince me it was a rattlesnake.)

The ones in captivity also change color from dark to light. They also seem quite interested in everything.

RED ALERT! RED ALERT!

Anyway, 1/2 a David Attenborough would be enough.
