Rescues

The rescue group I'm in just received a call from a farmer at Bourke, 500km away. He has 60 emus in a paddock and he wants us to get them out and take them away. He became angry when he was told we can't get them, and we had nowhere to put them anyway.

They're wild. They came for the food and water and overstayed their welcome, especially since there's neither left.

Did the emus just run over and decide tostop there? I doubt it. He's a farmer, right? ANd he realized he couldn't take care of them I bet. That's his own damn fault and I bet he knows it.

No, that's what emus do. They are the only bird I know of with a "bird brain" and are astounding stupid. They would have entered his paddocks for food and water and now can't find their way out. Now they're eating the food he puts out for his sheep. (Right now the state looks like a patch of bare dirt with trees.) I suspect he will shoot them. Best thing really since they're starving to death.

For him, maybe. I don't think anyone in their right mind expects a rescue organization to be able to take a herd of farm animals.

Or they could wind up in the US, like the bald-butt ostriches I saw going back to Chicago during the winter, once.

How the heck did he manage to corral 60 emus anyway? I'm sure they didn't just all waltz in there. Well, ok, maybe he did put out a sign that said "free bird seed" under and anvil tied to a string..........
