Never show on a newsgroup the bits of your past that you find painful.

During a discussion on Eating Dog Meat Leads To Cannibalism, I argued that it didn't follow. I shot some farm dogs, so does it mean I will now feel comfortable killing my family?

I wish I'd kept out of the argument. Now a waste of oxygen has labled me an admitted dog murderer. I said things to him I don't regret saying, but they should have been kept off a.l.f.

I think it's time I kept off a.l.f. too, for a while. Not a day goes by without me feeling increasingly alienated there.

I remember that day on the farm so well. Every time I see a working sheepdog I remember it again.

1) What is a.l.f

2) Stuff em, i helped my grandad put down a couple of dogs who'd taken some rat bait when I was a kid, i've also helped put down some cats who had eaten snail poison, I guess that makes me a murderer too.

I have no problem with people who eat dogs, or cats for that matter, it's a cultural thing, i'm sure some indians have hysterics because we eat cows.

I personally wouldn't eat dog or cat, but that's because I've been raised where they are pets, and you dont eat pets, but in other countries they aren't.

doesnt make my culture better or worse than anyone elses and anyone who says so, needs to take a look around the big old mean nasty world and see how it really runs.

1)A.L.F. = Alt.Lifestyle.Furry, a newsgroup. Fairly nice place actually, if you ignore the stuff you don't like. Of course, there will be times when you post something just to put your two cents in, and most days that pays off -- but there are days where your two cents get's you clouted across the noggin. I usually do like Batty does in cases like these - back away and change my perspective.

2)Ion Otter (Alexander Troutnoodler) actually posted something along the lines of your thoughts here, about cultural views being different in each country, and how some of our stuff would horrify others. It got him clouted about the noggin, but I know Ion -- he'll take it with a big grain of salt and keep right on posting. (heh, if it get's really bad, he goes otter on someone...)

3)I think the thing has gotten way out of paw myself -- but I think the flavor of ALF is changing yet again, as people are moving back towards more calming and comforting posts than the flamers -- and the occasional troll that enters just makes us laugh and move on.

Thank you.. that explains why the somewhat over reaction to battys post.

I was talking about the same thing to a friend of mine, the afternoon before I saw battys post, and he was somewhat horrified about people eating cats/dogs/rabbits etc etc, but at least he didnt go postal at me for it

Nice to know that he was able to discuss it with you without going postal. I think that people overall, once they get to know you and how you post (even better if they've met you in furson) get comfortable being able to discuss things without "Going postal". The current crop of ALF posters are starting to get that way: comfy with how everybody else posts. You'll always see posts from furs with "Strong Voices" -- strong opinions -- so you know about what to expect from that fur when he/she posts. I think it makes for more interesting reading sometimes, and even makes me think.

Oh I agree, having different opinions and being able to state them without slipping over the line makes for a very interesting conversation.

Much better than everyone agreeing all the time.

True! As long as it isn't stepping over the line; it does give a lot of good information for others reading the thread to keep informed, or at the very least, to go read up on the information being posted so you CAN keep properly informed.

Something I miss from when I started posting on ALF...

Cripes' sake! Yours is the second entry I've seen regarding the whole stupid argument.

I worked a farm for over a year. Sometimes you HAVE to shoot them. It's never pleasant but it's a better end than 1) watching the animal slowly starve to death 2) watching the animal eat your profits (or just maim them; dogs can't seem to make a clean kill and often enjoy toying with the livestock first) or 3) having a REAL problem when they interbreed with the local coyote population and start going after people.

It's a part of life that has to be dealt with. There's a difference between humanely shooting an animal that is a nuisance, a danger, and unable to make it in the wild and taking pot shots at a stray.

You make me glad I left ALF now. Maybe we ought to have a community here....

What a great Idea!! Let Ursus and I know when you've gotten it together, if you would... Wabbit.

You bet. I need to tinker with it a bit because it's possible to set up FAQs and everything. Once I have that, I'll draw out a logo and do a custom design.

It's been gotten together. Its ID is Lifestylers and I posted the URL in my journal.

Nope. I can set it up that way if we have problems but so far everyone's being civil.

Do you have a livejournal client? If you do, there's a command in the "LiveJournal" header that says "select active journal" (control+J on the keyboard). That should allow you to post.

If you haven't joined yet, you simply go to the profile page and at the top you'll see the line that tells you to click to join.

You can also post by going to the web client and selecting which journal you want to post in. If you've joined, it should be an option. You do have to be signed in for it to show.

I haven't paid much attention to a.l.f. recently. For one thing, I'm too busy to do little more than skim the 100+ messages the queue up. For another thing, I have a tendancy to stay out of these little shit storms, as one, they have little to do with the topic, and two, it always comes down to a pissing match, anyway.

I skimmed the first post of the thread in question, then killed it. Waste of my time, as I wasn't at the World Cup.

Still, I got dragged into it. Fox Deco IMed me and babbled about it for 15 minutes. I stood my ground, calling it a cultural thing. I'm not going to leave a.l.f. I've never left *anywhere*, but I'll keep my nose out of it for a while, until something worth my time comes along.

I won't be leaving, but I will be putting all threads on Ignore for a few days so that I can step back a bit and relax.

Hiya, Batty... *hugs* Yeah, I know the feeling.. Ursus and I have rarely posted there; I finally posted something to respond to David Fox -- thanking them both for their arguments, and trying to get David to shut up! *grins* Otherwise, I know how you feel. I dislike stuff like that because *everyone* has to get their two cents in -- and keep the thread alive.

As for your experience: I've never worked on a farm, but I respect those who do -- if you had to kill those dogs for whatever reason, then you've probably saved them a lot of grief and pain. I've seen you're work with bats and rescuing -- I know that you wouldn't harm anybody or anything just for kicks.

Don't let the little minds that responded to your ALF posting get you down, ok? You have furiends that support you -- I'm one, and I know Ursus is another.

*hugs*

I never could fit in there really, I eventually left the AFD newsgroups as well...

Just too many twinks and trolls compared to people worth talking to. Much as I wanted to fit in there, the signal to noise ratio was just too much.

I reside in fur.lifestyle, nice and quiet, in fact, its all but vacant, but then, no trolls, and any strangers that wander in can expect a polite greeting. I'm drooling at the thought of a forum over here for lifestylers, I'm not exactly a lifestyler, but then, I'm more than a fan... lifan perhaps?

The longer I stay away from ALF, the easier it is. ALF expatriate, me. AFD I miss sometimes, and it's usually amusing to drop by AFF and giggle at the flamewars... but ALF... well. Yeah. I hear ya. :\

I suppose it was easier for me to leave anyway, since I never really felt like I belonged there to begin with... but I tried, I honestly did try. You should read some of the stuff I've written (and not shared around much) about my discontent with ALF. Or maybe you shouldn't. :P

Thanks for the email. I laughed.

It's painfully close to way the wannabe lifestylers behave.

I wrote a DIY AFD entry post, but I don't think I have it any more.

I went over and read part of the thread; that guy is an idiot, if you ask me. You've done more than anybody I can think of to be kind to animals, with all your bat rescues... Feh. Words fail me. Please don't let this get to you, idiots like that aren't worth your time.

Don't take it to heart, Batty. Zenwolf a.k.a. Snuhwolf and many other voices in his head, is well-known for this kind of thing. He labelled me a racist cop because Pokkit did it furst, and he found it amusing. He's a very unhappy furson, and now that most people have caught on to him and ignore him, he's getting desperate for attention. Now they're even making fun at him indirectly, with satirical posts about trolls.

I've had to put down dogs and even horses. It doesn't make me a murderer. Though I *have* killed too many plants in my day. }:x(
