Well that showed me
1 May 2002 18:14Never show on a newsgroup the bits of your past that you find painful.
During a discussion on Eating Dog Meat Leads To Cannibalism, I argued that it didn't follow. I shot some farm dogs, so does it mean I will now feel comfortable killing my family?
I wish I'd kept out of the argument. Now a waste of oxygen has labled me an admitted dog murderer. I said things to him I don't regret saying, but they should have been kept off a.l.f.
I think it's time I kept off a.l.f. too, for a while. Not a day goes by without me feeling increasingly alienated there.
I remember that day on the farm so well. Every time I see a working sheepdog I remember it again.

Date: 1 May 2002 05:31 (UTC)2) Stuff em, i helped my grandad put down a couple of dogs who'd taken some rat bait when I was a kid, i've also helped put down some cats who had eaten snail poison, I guess that makes me a murderer too.
I have no problem with people who eat dogs, or cats for that matter, it's a cultural thing, i'm sure some indians have hysterics because we eat cows.
I personally wouldn't eat dog or cat, but that's because I've been raised where they are pets, and you dont eat pets, but in other countries they aren't.
doesnt make my culture better or worse than anyone elses and anyone who says so, needs to take a look around the big old mean nasty world and see how it really runs.
Somebody actually posted that...
Date: 1 May 2002 10:58 (UTC)2)Ion Otter (Alexander Troutnoodler) actually posted something along the lines of your thoughts here, about cultural views being different in each country, and how some of our stuff would horrify others. It got him clouted about the noggin, but I know Ion -- he'll take it with a big grain of salt and keep right on posting. (heh, if it get's really bad, he goes otter on someone...)
3)I think the thing has gotten way out of paw myself -- but I think the flavor of ALF is changing yet again, as people are moving back towards more calming and comforting posts than the flamers -- and the occasional troll that enters just makes us laugh and move on.

Date: 2 May 2002 04:46 (UTC)I was talking about the same thing to a friend of mine, the afternoon before I saw battys post, and he was somewhat horrified about people eating cats/dogs/rabbits etc etc, but at least he didnt go postal at me for it

Date: 1 May 2002 06:41 (UTC)I worked a farm for over a year. Sometimes you HAVE to shoot them. It's never pleasant but it's a better end than 1) watching the animal slowly starve to death 2) watching the animal eat your profits (or just maim them; dogs can't seem to make a clean kill and often enjoy toying with the livestock first) or 3) having a REAL problem when they interbreed with the local coyote population and start going after people.
It's a part of life that has to be dealt with. There's a difference between humanely shooting an animal that is a nuisance, a danger, and unable to make it in the wild and taking pot shots at a stray.
You make me glad I left ALF now. Maybe we ought to have a community here....

You can also post by going to the web client and selecting which journal you want to post in. If you've joined, it should be an option. You do have to be signed in for it to show.

Date: 1 May 2002 06:56 (UTC)I skimmed the first post of the thread in question, then killed it. Waste of my time, as I wasn't at the World Cup.
Still, I got dragged into it. Fox Deco IMed me and babbled about it for 15 minutes. I stood my ground, calling it a cultural thing. I'm not going to leave a.l.f. I've never left *anywhere*, but I'll keep my nose out of it for a while, until something worth my time comes along.

Date: 1 May 2002 09:05 (UTC)As for your experience: I've never worked on a farm, but I respect those who do -- if you had to kill those dogs for whatever reason, then you've probably saved them a lot of grief and pain. I've seen you're work with bats and rescuing -- I know that you wouldn't harm anybody or anything just for kicks.
Don't let the little minds that responded to your ALF posting get you down, ok? You have furiends that support you -- I'm one, and I know Ursus is another.

Date: 1 May 2002 08:08 (UTC)Just too many twinks and trolls compared to people worth talking to. Much as I wanted to fit in there, the signal to noise ratio was just too much.

Date: 1 May 2002 09:56 (UTC)I suppose it was easier for me to leave anyway, since I never really felt like I belonged there to begin with... but I tried, I honestly did try. You should read some of the stuff I've written (and not shared around much) about my discontent with ALF. Or maybe you shouldn't. :P

I wrote a DIY AFD entry post, but I don't think I have it any more.

Date: 3 May 2002 12:15 (UTC)I've had to put down dogs and even horses. It doesn't make me a murderer. Though I *have* killed too many plants in my day. }:x(
