The young kingfisher, all grown up and ready to go. He is in the flight aviary, ready for release. Last week the aviary was opened, and the kingfisher flew off. He should be well on the way north by now.

Kinfishers are lovely birds.

Q: Is the Kookaburra a member of the kinfisher family? I've always loved the beautiful blue on the underside of their wings (though it baffles me as to what purpose the colour serves when the rest of the bird is monochrome).

Beautiful bird. I've seen the European variety in the wild, but only from a distance. It's good to see one up close.
