Pugsley Bob

He's grown rather a lot since I last saw him.

He is a cute big little thing.I hadn't realized that they have different colored spikes. Are they different for whatever reason?

That's just the colours. The shiny black is actually very coarse hairs, not spines.

Ohhhh ok! I remember seeing pictures of some of the other little guys you have taken care of, I figured they'd be more like porcupines in that they are spiky all over. And you said it hurts when they poke you, so I assumed they were pokey everywhere but the snout :)

Very cute dude! :-)

Umm...I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know exactly what he is though. My mind says hedgehog but I know that's not right.

*checks the intarwebs*

Oh cool! :-)

It appears to be a cross between a hedgehog and an anteater. Right down to the prehensile tongue. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echidna ) Though that's almost certainly a simplification.

The paws seem to have very manipulative digits:

Another rescue I assume?

He is being raised by a friend. I get to look after him when his carer goes away.

I handled one of these at Taronga today, and her name was Pugsley!

I ended up covered in echidna drool, of course... but my god she was adorable. I didn't realise how gentle echidnas are.

Of course now my hands and arms are covered in red dots from the spines. I should disinfect those or I'll get gross pimples on my arms in a couple of days.

They are the nicest of our animals. Apart from the sticky spit. Not so nice.

An Echydena in a flower pot? Too cute. I must say, you have the most improbable critters down under!
