Bandi Bandi

The two snakes were bruised in accidents and spent time in rehab. They recovered and were released.

A small nocturnal snake known as a bandi bandi. They are common but not often seen. Plus, they are venomous but only a danger to legless lizards, their main food.

Yellow faced whip snake. A tiny, full grown snake, venomous like the bandi bandi but only a threat to tiny wall skinks. This little fellow is 24 inches long and almost as thick as a pencil.

Adult blue tongue lizard rescued from a back yard and relocated to somewhere safe. At some point in his past he lost all his toes. The injury is very old and doesn't seem to affect his life in the wild. He was very fat, heavy, and healthy. And grumpy and bitey.

A lot of little critters owe you a debt of gratitude...

You wouldn't think so with the speed they run/fly/slither off. Grateful critters are a thing of fiction, alas.

Yours has long been one of my favorite journals. I really appreciate what you're doing, and that you let us know what's going on with critters in your part of our world.

Thanks. I do my best to stay interesting online because I'm not really. Brad Paisley's "Online" applies to me (but not the bit about the marching band.)

Brad Paisley? I think I need to do some Googling.

Lizard toes lost to long-ago bushfire maybe? ie: running over something hot?

Can't say. Sometimes rats attack them during hibernation but that usually results in a dead lizard. It's very strange.

Leggo me toes!

If you were to poke me I'd say liz got into a tussle with another liz. I recall we had (and probably still do) a blue tongue that lost its toes after being mistakenly housed with another of the same gender.

That's right! I'd forgotten. Strong jaws and fragile toesies.

Y'know, you really are getting quite good with your camsera! Macro shots aren't easy, but you seem to have mastered them.

300mm lens on full zoom with close cropping in photoshop and no image size reduction. I'd love a proper macro lens.

On the other paw, I finally got a macro attachment, and my camera/lens assembly were stolen. I got them replaced, but the macros don't work as well with the new one.

I'm curious about the snakes. Is their venom only poisonous to their targets, or are they just smart enough not to try to eat something a thousand times bigger than them? What happens if you aggravate one enough to go into defensive mode?

Snakes use a lot of energy creating venom and only ever use enough to kill the prey. People bitten by snakes are usually given a tiny Go Away dose, which just happens to be fatal due to the venom being horribly toxic.

Reptiles do everything possible to conserve energy. They don't want to waste it on food they can't eat.

Ahh. So you're just being incredibly, incredibly brave by handling them.

If I had a hammer
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening
All over this land
I'd hammer out danger
I'd hammer out a warning
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Pretty snake piccies! You do get the most interesting critters in (though I'm sure you get your fair share of endless magpies and possums as well...).

Hi, my name is Rachel Mills.

I am out at Firgrove Estate, Dubbo

I need advice about a Pee Wee chick I am rearing.

We have a family that have lived here for years and rear babies each season. They feed daily on our catfood outside.

They kicked their 2 babies out of the nest to begin their new life but one baby was not quiet ready. We put it back up the tree with its sibling on a branch. They were both there the next morning. That evening though, after 42deg, we found the smaller one in our vegie garden on the straw heap. I have been feeding it insectivore mix and it is going well. I tried to release it back to its family after 2 days but they were not interested. So it lives flying around ontop of the kitchen cupboards pooping all over the place!

It is wanting to feed more often so I am guessing it is ready for more solid food- maybe meal worms or mince????? What do you suggest?

Also when its time to release it do I do it here as it was born here and when do I release it age wise? If I do it now it will die wont it as it doesnt know how to eat? Lots of questions sorry!

Keen to hear from you.

Regards, Rachel
