Sacred Kingfisher

A young, almost-juvenile sacred kingfisher. He is still young enough to gape at anything that moves, which means feeding him isn't the fight I usually have with kingfishers. Hopefully I'll get him to self feed meal worms and I Can't Believe It's Not Meal Worms from a tray. He hasn't been long out of the nest and is quite fat. Rehab looks good.

"I can't believe it's not meal worms?" What on earth is that? I mean,, yes a mealworm substitute, but what does it consist of?

I can't believe it's not meal worms

4 boiled eggs (very boiled ie 20 minutes)
80g Insecivore feed supplement
200g very lean ground beef'

Mash together in an old food processor. Don't use a good one; your mum (or wife) will get cranky.

What you don't use in the next few days can be frozen. I make golf-ball sized lumps so I only have to thaw what I need.

The eggs must be boiled for 20+ minutes. There is a protein in the albumen that stops calcium uptake, so you have boil them for ages to make sure it's broken down.

Make them holy. Boil the hell out of them.

Is it too late to add that iridescent green to your tat?

How pretty! The emerald green is so bright!

I was telling a bird friend of mine about the peewee mafia. It took me awhile to explain it, but he thinks it's up here too!

The kingfisher is a juvenile, so his colours will get brighter.

How come you have him? Kidnapped? Caught-by-cat? Otherwise, it sounds like a fledgling fresh out of the nest that the parents would still be feeding.

I think he left the nest too early. He can't fly at all, but he can flap like mad. This species also nest in hollow tree branches which leaves them open to nest raiding by lace monitors and snakes. Something drove the bird out too early.
