Essential Supplies

I Called in at the new bottle shop on the way home to pick up some essential supplies. Some Coopers, I thought, that vintage ale was rather yummy and a six-pack would go down a treat. The new shop is huge! It's like a food supermarket, but with alcohol. I haven't seen anything like this since I was in Dubai Airport.

I walked past the rows of Scotch and headed for the beers. Coopers! Pale Ale, Sparkling Ale and Vintage! mmmmm. Oh my goodness! They have all the James Squire beers! Porter, IPA, Amber! Ooooh! Look at all those imported beers! Beers with Cyrillic and Sanskrit labels. Also Ashi, Sapporo, Bintang. Tiger. Samuel Adams! Newcastle Brown! Kilkenny! VELTINS! Wait... is that Tui? It is! And... Monteiths! MONTEITHS BLACK! EEEEEEE!I'll have a six pack of that!

And then I saw it.

Old Speckled Hen. OLD SPECKLED HEN!

I Squeed. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HEEE HEE HEEEEEEEEE! I hugged the shelves. I grabbed a sixpack and headed for the checkout.

My fridge has Monteiths Black and Old Speckled Hen.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HEEE HEE HEEEEEEEEE!

You're gonna need a chaperone in that place....

Samuel Adams!

That's the first time I've ever heard somebody outside the U.S. be excited for an American beer.

I was surprised at that mention, too, and I know hardly anything about beer.

The shop also had all the usual suspects: Budwieser, Millers, Coors, Schlitz.

Meh.

Sam Adams is as good as the average Aussie beer (Tooheys New, Vic Bitter) and better than Fosters and XXXX. A few years ago I raided all the local bottle shops, looking for an Ameican Beer That Didn't Suck, and Sam Adams was the only ABTDS I could find.

It's not a bad drop.

What variety of beer is Old Speckled Hen? Heh! ;)
Now I shall be looking for it in Ye Olde Importe Case.

All I have to share is Popcorn, Indiana Gourmet Smoked Cheddar Cheese flavored crack...I mean Kettle Corn.:D
They have several varieties:

The stuff is addictive and goes well with beer, soda, or just plain munchie attacks.
I'm taking some with me next time I visit my Indiana relations.
They'll be amused, no doubt;).

Good God how I miss beer. Rickards has a new one out and I want to try it *so* badly. It's NOT FAIR!

I'm sending your icon to a dear friend of mine who is part of the Celiac Cooperative... he'll get a big kick out it.

*grin* I stole the idea from someone who is lactose intolerant. :)

Have you ever been to Tommy's Joynt in San Francisco? In addition to the excellent BBQ buffalo that they serve, they have suds from all over the world. Bet you could find a few in there that would make you Squeee...

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been to the US, so no, never been to Tommy's.

[identity profile] ccdesan.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, when you do make it over, put Tommy's on your itinerary! Image

And if you ever get to Salt Lake, be sure to let me know. You've got a couch to crash on and a built-in tour guide...

Monteiths Black is rather good, yeah. Tui is diabetic horse piss.

Tui was the first indication that I'd hit the NZ section. They didn't have any Spieghts, which was understandable.

There are soooo many beers I like now.
Soooooo many.
Just as a random one though, Singha is surprisingly good, and is an odd occurrence where the export version is significantly better than the local version.

Did someone say BEER!!! Whilst living here in the States I have found that if you move past the well known brews there are hundreds, if not thousands of beers. Every city and town has micro brewerys, or macro brewerys. Roslyn is quite a small town in Eastern Washington, where they filmed Northern Exposure. Whilst there I drank Roslyn Beer, made by the Roslyn Brewing Company. Porter's Black Butte is delicious, and Henry Weinhard's is a nice more major brand. All this talk is making me thirsty.......

Funny, just last night I visited a little pub in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA called the Muddy Pig, which has a very eclectic beer menu, and what did I have? An Old Speckled Hen!! And now just today, I decide to check out your journal going back aways and find this post. What a coincidence!!

SYNCHRONICITY!
