List 5 things which are basic common knowledge in your culture, which people outside are unfamiliar with. This is not about obscurity, but something everyday to you, that others go "bzuh?" at.

1. Being called "an old bastard" is a complement. Being called "a bit of a bastard" is not.
2. Vegemite
3. Native trees don't shed their leaves, but the do shed their bark.
4. Most people in this country have little or no contact with wild animals (80% of the population is urban)
5. "Tin" (aka corrugated iron) is a common roofing material, especially outside major cities.

I've tried vegemite. Vegemite is evil.

nonsense. is tasty (in very very small doses).

Mind you, the Aussie whose sandwich I nicked still doesn't believe me.

A friend of mind calls Vegemite "Yank Repellent." When he was working at the Freeport Mine in Papua, he could clear out the mess room with the smell of one vege sandwich. 8)

Did you spread it like you would peanut butter?

Yes. Is that what makes it evil?

ah.

The best way to eat vege is to take a slice of hot buttered toast, and spread a really small amount of vege on top. A really small amount; such a small amount that toast still shows through and you're wondering if you have enough.

From here you can work your way up to an amount of vege that actually stains the toast.

In other words, it is an acquired taste.

I KNOW ABOUT VEGEMITE!

I listen to Men At Work.

You know, I get the feeling that this meme is going to be very difficult for me to do. Our culture is already so visible...

1. "Just now" is actually a real period of time. It's just undefined. Ditto "now now"
2. Pap (ground up maize, boiled in water to make stiff porridge-like stuff) goes with just about everything
3. "Sharp sharp" is not a description of a knoife. It's a way of saying goodbye.
4. Everyone knows that the real term for a BBQ is 'braai'. BBQ's are silly little gas things that Yanks have. Noone should leave a braai untainted by the smell of wood smoke, soot, grease and brandy and coke :)
5. Taxis to us are actually minibus-death-traps crammed full of people which have the peculiar ability to defy normal mechanics and travel at least 3 times as fast as the manufactured ever thought possible.
