I own a legal, original copy of a DVD: The STransporter 2

I have a legal copy of Windows Xp

I want to play my DVD on my computer, but I can't. Windows Media Player won't let me.

I use Media Player Classic (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm), with the K-lite codec pack.

I manually disable WMP in my computer's registry. It requires editing about 500 duplicated entries. This is why I'm loathe, now, to rebuild windows. I've done this edit three times, now, after full or partial rebuilds.

I like media player classic, but I'm also quite taken with VLC, which has the added advantage of playing .mkv files, which is good.

PowerDVD is another good dvd player.

Is it a permissions problem? I had to purchase 3rd party software to get it to work. Stupid Windows.

Just google "Windows XP DVD decoder codec" and you should come up with plenty.

If I were an OS, I wouldn't let you play that movie either. :P

I also think Hudson Hawk is a sadly under-rated classic.

So there.

The video game was nice too.

Ah, the joys of DRM, letting the entertainment industry tell you when, where, how and with whom you're allowed to enjoy content that you've legally purchased! And it's for your benefit that they're doing this! <3

If you own a legal copy of the disk, you are allowed by law to have at least 1 backup for (archival) purposes, right? Well, find a cracked download that is DRM free. 's what I would do.

Currently, my computer won't play any DVD's (well, excepting data disk DVD's), but that is a fault of my disk drive, which uses LightScribe burning technology that apparently interferes with the reading of movies.

Also, if you are using Windows Media Player for anything at all, then something is wrong with this picture. Download WinAmp.

That varies wildly by country, not to mention day of the week.

Well, the way I see it is, if you already went out and legally purchased a copy, they should have no problem with you keeping any other copies, as long as you intend them for personal use.

It is very much illegal to pump out copies of the disk with the intent of selling them or giving them out. But having an extra .iso to boot up on the computer should be ok, as long as that's all you use it for.

"Doctor, doctor! It hurts when I do *this*!"

Well don't DO that!

VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/)

I'll put in another vote for VLC Player. Good tool, plays everything I've ever thrown at it, plays well with OS.

Windows Media Player is complete shit.

Cyberlink PowerDVD comes with many DVD drives these days, and ignores region codes.

VLC Media Player will play just about any normal format[1], and is free.

My usual way of handling a DRM'd DVD is to run it through DVD Decrypter and then Gordian Knot, and produce an AVI file. Then I file the DVD and never look at it again.

[1]: I don't use it for DVDs. But I assume it could handle it.

Use VLC Player.

That's what I use for playing DVD movies.

Actually, this may not have anything to do with DRM.

Windows doesn't come with a MPEG2 Codec, because, it's still patented, and needs to be bought like any other piece of software. :)

However, besides all that, you can download VLC for free which will play almost any conceivable format of anything.

That's because it's Windows Media player. It's shite. Get VLC. It will play anything.
