Qantas Domestic baggage handlers can destroy laptop screens. Even if the laptop is in a padded bag.

The cost of repairing a laptop screen is more than the cost of a new laptop with more ram, hdd and cpu power.

You can no longer buy laptops with PCMCIA, because they all have ExpressCard connections.

Dad's 3G Wireless Internet connection is PCMCIA, so now I have to buy him a new card to fit. The way Telstra has things set up, when you buy a new 3G connection you also buy a new account despite having a perfectly good old account linked to a now-useless card. I have to cancel the old account, if I can find the details, and set up the new account, and hope that Telstra doesn't bugger everything up and cancel the office ADSL account as well.

ah bugger. I *know* they're going to do that.

Qantas aren't replacing it?

Add the cost of the new phone line to the insurance claim.

They claim it wasn't packed properly for check-in baggage. He should have carried it as carry-on, but he didn't.

I'm looking for a hard-shelled bag for the new laptop; something with a tough outer layer.

The Qantas conditions of carriage (http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/beforeYouTravel/conditionsCarriageLong#jump7) actually list computers as items that you "must not include in your checked luggage" (section 7.4).

Whilst it is unfortunate that this has happened, it is specifically included in the conditions of carriage for (presumably) this reason.

Another Tom Bihn fan!

I don't think the Brain Cell is quite what Den is after, however.

It seems like the baggage handlers will find a way to break anything. :/

You dont check anything of value if you are passing through heathrow because it will be stolen. All the baggage problems at T5 were because the handlers were looking for somewhere they could open the bags without beeing seen on CCTV

Ah - you must never give baggage handlers a chance to get anywhere near a laptop.

Expensive delicate equipment should be carried as hand luggage.

Hard drives can be wiped by the x-rays, as well.

For a hard drive to be erased, they would have to use an MRI machine. X-Rays on their own will do nothing, and the magnetic fields created by the rest of the equipment are too weak.

My son's getting a Mac laptop case from http://www.civilianlab.com/

United Airlines won't fly musical instruments unless you sign a waiver for any damages. When the HS band went to New York, they dented the crap out of the sousaphones, and broke a 75-year-old accordion. And, of course, they were not responsible. Even in New York, finding an accordion repairman is not a trivial task.

I thought the 3G account was bound to the sim card, if thats the case, ejecting the sim card from the new one and inserting the sim from the old pcmcia unit may get it back on the air with the original account.
