Snorkle died. Bugger.

The zoovets did everything they could and he still died. They asked everyone they could get hold of and the prognosis for puggles under 150g is very poor. Snorkle weighed 90g when I got him. Dr Ben did a post mortem but there was nothing wrong as such, just everything was very immature. He said the first person to raise a puggle this small will be writing the book on How To Raise Tiny Puggles, because there is nothing out there now.

poop.

Don't write him off yet, there might still more puggles that need to be hand-reared.

Den, I'm sure you did all you could to keep Pugles alive, so don't feel too badly about it.
After all, this is uncharted territory as far as human-raised puggles go.

Who knows? You still might be the one who writes that book...

Poor lil dude. Thank you, and thank the zoovets for doing as much as you could to give the wee bloke a chance.

You gave it a damn good try. Bugger. And bugger.

And yes, you really need to write that book. How big was Fips when you started? And Spook was dern tiny, too, and you kept him going a dern long time.

I still reckon you're the Puggle Master.

I agree with other comments - you may well write that book one day.

I'm sorry for your loss. You tried the best your could and I'm sure he was comfortable while you had him. Keep trying; I'll bet one day you'll be the one writing that book.

I never mentioned how much I love everything you do for these animals. You've really opened my mind and my heart to critters I never would have considered before.

No tears from you, mate! You gave it a Hell of a go, so no shame or bad thoughts.

You should keep a journal of everything you tried. By the time you successfully raise one, you'll have your book.

I had a thought about how you can try to feed the next one?

Ask the zoovet if they can somehow get you a balloon catheter. Poke some tiny holes in it, then tape it to the flat part of your forearm. Place the puggle on your forearm, then wrap it with a warm towel.

Invert your arm so the puggle is held upside-down, then slowly press the plunger on a syringe filled with puggle milk (equivalent).

I figure if you can find a way to mimic the action of milk being secreted through skin, you'll have it.

that sounds like a damn good idea. I'll try it next time.

Another unique aspect of puggles is there connection to the ground (both echinas who are buried and platypii who are in dens close to the water table). I read a website speculating on why monostremes are in eggs and milk in skin patches and the high humidity of the dirt and fight against dehydration was part of that speculation. Keeping the puggle close to 100% humidity might be a factor to increase the survival chances. I found my baby rodents did much better in a high humidity environment while nursing as long as there was low ammonia which having a dirt base to their litter helped to achieve the high humidity without ammonia production.
