It enhances revenue both directly and by encouraging users to upgrade to new, exciting productivity software with new, exciting features such as being able to work with Vista. And it preserves Micro$oft's efforts to keep the computer software marketplace simple and pure. We fail to see why you object to it.
Incidentally, discussing the features of Micro$oft products in derogatory fashion violates the EULA to which you agree by allowing photons to bounce off Micro$oft product packaging and into your eyes. You will be hearing from us.
