On 18 August 1966 D Company of 6RAR met the Viet Cong 275 Regiment in a rubber plantation at Long Tan. During four hours of fighting 18 Australians and 275 Viet Cong were killed.

Long Tan isn't remembered like Gallipoli or Kokoda or Tobruk, but it bloody well should be.

I wish Viet Vets (Digger and GI) got the respect the WW2 and Korea vets get. There is still that "It Wasn't A Real War" mentality.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Long Tan was the first and last time VC went against the Aussies in a frontal assault. For the next 9 years it was all skirmishes.
