Date: 12 Aug 2007 04:11 (UTC)The very first episode went to air in 1977, and the original series ran until 2001 when it was cancelled due to lack of viewer interest.
In 2002, Jeremy Clarkson, who'd been a presenter on the original series from 1989 to 1999, pitched a proposal to the BBC for a new format one hour Top Gear show. The "new format" series debuted on the BBC on 20 October 2002 using a studio and test track at the airstrip at Dunsfold Park in Surry, and many Top Gear fans are unaware of any episodes prior to the start of this "new format" series.
The first episode that was officially broadcast in Australia was episode 1 of Season 5 of the "new format" series.
It's a bit like the new Dr Who fans that consider that the first season of Dr Who starred Christopher Eccleston.
