BBC America will start showing Top Gear on Aug 20. Now the Yanks can see whole shows and not little segments on You Tube.

I wonder what series they will start with. The first one we saw here had the Chrysler vs Jaguar vs Monaro segment.

Top Gear goes back a long way. There are even two first Seasons.

The very first episode went to air in 1977, and the original series ran until 2001 when it was cancelled due to lack of viewer interest.

In 2002, Jeremy Clarkson, who'd been a presenter on the original series from 1989 to 1999, pitched a proposal to the BBC for a new format one hour Top Gear show. The "new format" series debuted on the BBC on 20 October 2002 using a studio and test track at the airstrip at Dunsfold Park in Surry, and many Top Gear fans are unaware of any episodes prior to the start of this "new format" series.

The first episode that was officially broadcast in Australia was episode 1 of Season 5 of the "new format" series.

It's a bit like the new Dr Who fans that consider that the first season of Dr Who starred Christopher Eccleston.

I used to watch the original Top Gear on BBC World, before Austar decided I'd prefer Sky News instead and changed their Basic line-up. (I didn't, so I cancelled the account.)

I remember one one ep they reviewed the pre-Monaro Commadore HSV and said some not-nice things about it before having a blast on the test track. Very much like they did with the Monaro.

If you know where to look, all of the "new format" episodes are available for torrent download (there's one big 36.6GB file that has all the "new format" episodes up to and including Season 8, and season 9 is available in a separate 2.5GB file). A few of the "old format" episodes are also available for torrent download (The 1989 season was the oldest I saw listed).

Hmm... one wonders where to look... maybe an email would reveal it? I'd hate to cause Batty to be guilty of violating the LJ TOS.

My email is this username at hotmail. ;)
