Back in Dubbo. Now I remember why I hate driving in Sydney. And a week without Internet.

Remember Knut the bear cub animal rights activists said should be killed? Half truths and media fabrications. Knut was never in danger and the activist never wanted him dead.

*sigh*
It's soooooooo easy to get sucked in by these things. Especially when the crazies really HAVE said and done things like this.

It does just go to show, how easy it is for rational caring intelligent animal protectionists to get tarred with the same brush. 'Cause it's the crazies who make all the noise.

Worse, people will think that the exposure of this media botch has proven that there are no crazies. Try to tell people, for instance, that there are PETA-run "shelters" that kill animals at the first opportunity, and they'll say "that's a myth," and probably point to the soon-to-be-written Snopes article on Knut as if it settled the matter.

This is the trouble. There ARE certified loonies out there who label themselves as animal rights activists, and those of us who work in animal welfare and rescues are lumped in with them.

People ask me about donating to PETA (what with me being an animal rescuer and all) and I tell them about their "shelters." PETA isn't pro-animal, they're anti-Human. ALF are as bad, and are anti-conservation. Greenpeace I am still undecided about; they do good things then they do something stupid.

I always say, if you want to improve the welfare of animals, you have to go where the animals are. I suppose that is what PETA "shelters" are doing but their solution sure does not improve their life if it ends their life. I think animal rights people need to have a minimum level of experience IMPROVING animal life before they can be the authority on what is bad care practices. AR licensing - required vet or vet assistance education and animal care experience before they are allowed to protest? that would shut them up for a bit.
