I usually don't get excited about things like iPODS and such, but I like the iPHONE. I can see a lot of use in this thing, especially for the company guys who are on the road all the time and need email/web/phone connections (I'll have to put a filth-filter on Pat's to keep him away from the XXX sites). So I rang Apple Australia to see when they are releasing the iPHONE here.

They're not.

At least, they not releasing the iPHONE until they get assurances from Telstra that the iPHONE will be supported by whatever network is in place - CDMA or 3G - and at the moment Telstra has made no reply apart from telling Apple Aust "We'll look into it."

The bloke I spoke to said he was doubtful Telstra would let another competitor into the market to use the 3G network they sell phones for. "If that's the case," said the fellow at Apple, "Apple will have to set up its own network."

The iPhone has one glaring issue that I see.

Lack of external development of software. Current policy indicates that this is not, and will not be allowed. Without that, the PDA-esque features are DOA as far as I'm concerned. With that development support, the iPhone is a monster, without it, it's an over-expensive toy. The current Apple line is that this type of development will never be allowed on an iPhone. Whether that will actually remain the case as time goes on, I don't know.

I don't care about being locked in to a phone if it does everything we need without hassles.

But, Apple is going for bloggers who link to iPHONE skins for PDAs (http://www.smh.com.au/news/mobiles--handhelds/apple-crunches-websites-over-iphone-skins/2007/01/15/1168709656280.html)

Possibly in your case, but I don't see it in general.

I see issues for your run of the mill businessman already. First one that comes to mind: lack of MS Office support for one. Love it or hate it, those file formats are the defacto standard throughout much of the business world. Likewise, no Exchange support. Another big zap for a lot of businesses.

Those two alone will make it a lot less attractive to a *lot* of businesses. While it may come along eventually, outside development would mean it would be available almost immediately.

And these keep me in a job, as long as BlackBerry is the only one that does MS Office well :)
