Some Windows update or other has decided I don't want to run Zone Alarm firewall and want the XP firewall instead. Zone Alarm autostart was disabled, so I thought "Oh! I'll just uninstall/reinstall ZA and it'll be fine.' NO! Uninstall went fine, but now the installer can't find the truevector service installed components. I can't install Zone Alarm and I am now stuck with an almost non-configurable firewall that doesn't tell me ANYTHING apart from the fact that it's working. I can't trust a firewall like that.

Your subject line and the spelling of it immediately conjured up in my mind a scene from Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, which involves some bloodiness involved with a broken window and a hand under a window sill.

Try this:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160
It's free, easy to configure and it will let you what goes in and out on your computer.

Perhaps there is an update to Zone Alarm to resolve this conflict?

Tried that, but it doesn't install without the "true vector services" running.

There seems to be a lot of information about ZA/True Vector Services out there, so you're not the only person to have a problem with it.

The True Vector Services is the guts of ZA. It runs as a service/background process, and it's possible that the XP update simply disabled its startup.

I would suggest doing a complete uninstall of ZA in Safe Mode. Then reboot into Safe Mode and search for the file vsmon.exe. If you find it, check to see if it's running in the Task Manager. If it is, kill it. Then rename/move/delete the file so it can't run again. Reboot into normal mode and try re-installing the latest version of ZA.

But Windows knows best! You don't need to use that competing product... trust in Gates, because Microsoft only releases the very finest, most bug free products!

*kaff*
