Date: 3 Nov 2006 14:58 (UTC)Hmm, my English was shaped in Germany at school and by a 1-year stay in England where I had friends from England, Scotland and France mostly. When I went on a trip to the US the next year, someone told me after a conversation: "I know you are not American, but I have not a clue where you do come from." Heh! :)

Date: 3 Nov 2006 22:53 (UTC)Once during a lecture they were analyzing a poem by T S Elliot (I think) that had been translated. The poem was about a beutelratte, and everyone assumed she'd seen one. The professor showed her a photo, and she said "OH! That's a wombat." They thought she was making it up.
