Puggle would have drunk more but he was bulging alarmingly so I stopped. What a guts.

I've always wondered why certain animals and species will continue eating when they've no room for the grub. It doesn't seem to be a very smart thing to do.

You could always tie a string to him and use him as a puggle-balloon :)

Food's a great deal more scarce in the wild; the idea of "enough to eat" is an alien concept to a lot of non-domesticated animals, so there's not much room for evolutionary pressure against overeating.

With echidnas the mother only returns to feed the youngster every 2 or 3 days, so he has to drink enough to last that long. One in captive care doesn't know he'll get fed every night so he just sucks in as much as he can. When I'm happy my puggle is putting on weight (as opposed to just filling up with milk) I'll be skipping every second feed to mimic the wild.
