Well "rentals" are a tad different from free use of the machine on a trial basis.
The phrase "Could you let us use..." is the give away. It implies free of charge; while "Could we rent a machine... , ... and if we like it could the rent paid be taken off the purchase price?" implies that they are ready to pay for the machine while it is being evaluated.
Even things with 30-day free trial periods have to be paid for, at least in part. If you don't like the item in those 30 days then you return the item and your money is refunded, usually minus some for wear and tear.
