Frogmouths, blue tongues

A pair of Tawny Frogmouths roosting outside my brother's house in Port Macquarrie. The birds are doing their best to look like dead eucalyptus branches, an effect spoiled by the palm tree they're in.




A pair of baby blue tongue lizards. These were caught by a kid who was taking them to school. A kindly passer-by saw the kid showing them to friends, and offered to buy them. $4 later she had the lizards, and 30 minutes after that they were in my care. I released them into my back yard because it's blue-tongue friendly. They're smaller than the other two I have there and and have different colours, yet they're came from less than 5km away.

How much mollusc activity does a garden need to sustain blue tongues apart from the I-Can't-Believe-It's not Mollusc mix? They look like hearty little fellows:).

The ICBINM doesn't have the proteins they need, so when they need protein they'll go for slugs and snails. If I keep the veggies coming the yard will support 4 lizards.

The smaller skink in your hand looks colorwise, alot like my pet eastern blue tongue, skinkburt. (CB here in the usa, of course)

The colour variations in this area are light brown/dark brown (these guys), dark brown/light grey-brown (http://dewhitton.livejournal.com/694994.html#cutid1), dark brown/pale tan, and dark grey/light grey. They're all eastern blue-tongue lizards.

Ah, tawny frogmouths. So that's what they're trying to resemble. They always looked to me like an untidy heap of grey feathers, leaving you to take it on faith that there's a bird in there somewhere. :) I'm not sure why, but I like the beasties. They have character.

We used to have tawny frogmouths. To feed them' we'd approach, they'd gape, and we'd toss small Bird-Of-Prey meatballs into their mouths and half the time they'd eat it. As for blue tongues, we have 4: two ed animals, one in the Reptile House and one in quarantine.

Meh. All I have in my back yard are mice. You have much cooler creatures.
