Galah rescue

denLast night after work I rescued a galah from a member of the public. They'd hit the bird in the car and picked it up. The wing was broken, and they knew the wing was broken. You could see the ends of the tibia, radius and ulna poking through the feathers, and there was a lot of blood.
What I don't get is that they've held on to the bird for TWO WEEKS and hoped the wing would get better. They didn't take it to a vet. The ends of 3 bones were poking through the skin and they'd somehow thought the wing would spontaneously fix itself without strapping or pinning or any intervention from a vet.
Because, you know, it's just a galah. But if you're just going to kill it we'd like to keep him as a pet. His name is Jerry. He's eating well and there's nothing wrong with him apart from the wing, of course.
I told them I was taking the bird to the zoo vets. I lied. I euthanased it as soon as I got home. The poor bird might have had a chance two weeks ago, but he was so buggered he died without even fighting me.

Date: 6 Jan 2006 16:09 (UTC)It has a broken wing where they can *see* the tibia and no vet, let alone a zoo vet? AGH! Here it's knwn that if you have a seriously injured animal or bird, or one that is behavibg in an erratic fashion, you isolate it and call the professionals!
I agree there should be some sort of PSA. People need to know *what to do* because using the brain they have takes so much work:P.
