Last night after work I rescued a galah from a member of the public. They'd hit the bird in the car and picked it up. The wing was broken, and they knew the wing was broken. You could see the ends of the tibia, radius and ulna poking through the feathers, and there was a lot of blood.

What I don't get is that they've held on to the bird for TWO WEEKS and hoped the wing would get better. They didn't take it to a vet. The ends of 3 bones were poking through the skin and they'd somehow thought the wing would spontaneously fix itself without strapping or pinning or any intervention from a vet.

Because, you know, it's just a galah. But if you're just going to kill it we'd like to keep him as a pet. His name is Jerry. He's eating well and there's nothing wrong with him apart from the wing, of course.

I told them I was taking the bird to the zoo vets. I lied. I euthanased it as soon as I got home. The poor bird might have had a chance two weeks ago, but he was so buggered he died without even fighting me.

People can be cruel even when they mean well. Common sense would dictate that an animal who is bleeding needs immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, that sort of attitude is all too common. Look how many injured and starving pets the various animal cruelty agencies seize over here...and not one owner seems to understand what he or she did wrong.

At least you put the poor thing out of its pain and misery.
