He's an echidna. He was orphaned when his mum was killed by a train.

That first shot is very strange. I wasn't sure which end was which until I looked at the rest of the pix!

I didn't make it; can't remember where I found it in icon form, but the "screen cleaner" gif/movie is on the net in several forms, so I'd say go for it. ;)

Aww. What amazes me is that even when the spikes are mere five-o-clock shadow, those claws look fully developed and meanin' business.

Also--err, did Spook miss you when you were gone? Do you think he knew the difference between caretakers? I realize I know nothing about the emotional lives of our spiny friends...

There is a few days of confusion due to the different handler smells, then the milk flows and all cares are fogotten.

I'm not kidding when I write about slurping. The female doesn't have nipples and just oozes milk from some sking patches. The young one simply sticks its nose onto the milky patch and licks and slurps away. I get to see impressive milk bubbles from the nose.

Den, is it just me, or do puggles have an appearance that shows a definite similarity to a platypus.

From: [identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com
The two look very similar until the spines and long nose start to develop.

Looks like echidnas do not really have external ears

but neither does the platypus: "The platypus has no outer ear lobe":

Here are some more puggles:

http://www.platypus.org.uk/site-echidna/p_th.html

here is a sculpture of an echidna with long ears (what's up with that?):
http://www.andrearich.com/sculpture/echidna.htm
but the mascot makers here got it right:

Both simply have an ear canal, but the platypus has an extra flap that lets them close their ears while underwater.

Echidna with ears looks weird.

Another thing both Monostremes have is a spur on the feet of the males but the difference is in echidnas it does not contain poison like the platypus and also the females are born with one too and most shead the spur when they grow up:
