This little beastie was bitten by something. The wound has healed but the scarring runs right across his vent. He is with the zoovets now so they can check for damage to his reproductive organs and cloacca.

They are aesome, I got to pet one when visiting down there. He licked my finger, and had such a dry tongue.

I had one grab my finger and try to do crocodile-rolls. He almost dislocated the knuckle.

These colours are found in this area. Each area has it's own colours, but the tongue is always startlingly blue.

Very smooth, like snakes.

What pretty coloration! You sure have some strange critters down there, though. He looks like he's in the intermediate stage between lizard and snake. Can they really get around on those tiny legs?

Heh, probably still easier than these guys (http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/bioinformatics/lizards/images/lthumblivsna.htm)...

Neat! What's the difference between them and snakes, then?

They're a species of skink. This is a young one; fully grown they're about 18" long.

Cute skink. They've got a couple of 'em over at the Los Angeles Zoo - some [censored] smuggled them in in some socks a few years ago, only to get caught with them by the alert customs folks at LAX. They couldn't send 'em back, so they presented them to the zoo.

When alarmed they puff up, hiss, and poke their blue tonges at you. It's all very startling. Then the lizard runs away while you're thinking "Bloody hell! my HEART!"

They're actually little sweeties when handled and not dangerous are all, apart from a crushing bite if you're careless.
