So cute. I have some pictures of a white grey at the Australia Zoo (not an albino though). I love roos. *sigh*

Wow - never seen an albino 'roo before. What'll happen to him?

he'll be released into a local mob where carers can keep an eye on him.

OMG! I've never seen an albino roo before, I'm lead to believe they're pretty few and far between. I'm sure the people in my roo group [livejournal.com profile] kangaroos would love this. I'll send you an invite if you wouldn't mind crossposting this there?

no worries. I'll post as soon as I can.

They are very rare, and generally die from predation or skin cancers before they're too old.

Wouldn't it be kinder to send him to a zoo instead of releasing him, then? Though I suppose it's a natural variation, so it's not quite like releasing a crippled hawk instead of keeping it as an education bird.

If he were a rare species he'd go to a zoo, but the eastern grey kangaroo is one of the most common kangaroos around. Usually we'd let them go as far from town as possible, but he's scheduled to be released on a nearby farm so we can keep an eye on him.

Well, they don't have to worry about predation in captivity but I suppose skin cancer is still a risk. Would decreased sun exposure help any?

That would mean keeping him in an artificial shelter. He'll be going into a hevily wooded area on a farm so he has a chance.

Heck, northern Europeans die of skin cancer in Australia, and they've got melanin. . . .

"M-m-m-m-m-m-mouse! B-b-b-b-b-big!"" -Sylvester The Cat :D

Look at that little tiny 'roo with those great big feet! I think the dead giveaway are his eyes. They shine like beacons! "Here I am! Been up all night, the place was jumping so my eyes are bloodshot! Argh!"

And they say white roo is the basis for alfredo sauce.......:D
