Thanks to makovette acting at an Amazon relay, I now posess a set of Sennheiser PXC250 noise cancelling headphones. A quick trip to The Good Guys netted me an mp3 player to go with the headphones. The headphones are nice. When I turn them on little microphones in the earpieces pick up incoming ambient noises and retransmit them at 180* out of phase, effectively cancelling most of the noise.

mp3s never sounded so good.

Active noise cancelling headphones are freaky ... but they do work rather well.

I have a cheap set of Maxell HP-NC1 Noise Cancelling Headphones that I picked up on special at a Fry's back in 2000. Like everyone else I know that also bought a pair from that batch, mine eventually stopped working, but re-soldering of all the cable connections in the control box soon had mine working again.

Now if someone would only come up with a nice cordless headset / mic combo for the computer I'd be immensely happy.

Logitech did have one - but it was discontinued and I can't find old stock anywhere anymore *sigh*

I hate being tied to the computer/desk to listen to music or skype.

I'm pretty sure a Bluetooth setup would work for you, a lot of cell phones use those. James may be able to scare up the details...

I think they're planning something like that for the future... but so far it appears to only be available for cell phones
