Sub-adult king parrot. Compound fractures left wing and shoulder, necrosis. Euthanased.


Little Red Flying Fox. Barbed wire entanglement. All the bones in the tips of both wings were broken, membrane torn and the ligaments that give the trailing edge its shape were snapped. In his efforts to free himself, the bat chewed at the wire and damaged his mouth. His canines were broken, the palette was torn and a piece of his top lip had been torn off (visible in photo.) Euthanased.

These bats are highly strung and take badly to being caged. IF he survived the stress of being handled, he would have been in for 12 months rehab, and even then there is no garrentee that he would fly afterward. The damage to his mouth meant he couldn't be released anyway.

At least they're not suffering, now. It is too bad that they couldn't be rehabilitated though, they're both lovely, fascinating creatures.

One question, though. Do you ever deal with Dingos at all, or do you specialize with avian/air types?

We don't get dingos in this area. I rescue almost everything native, and specialize in bats rehab and a few types of birds.

I'm really not sure how breimh fround your journal. But I was just up at his place the other day (to watch a "documentary" on dragons). A discussion about anatomy insued and, I mentioned that I really don't know very much at all about macropods especially the internals. So far it's proven really difficult to find good material on the subject. So, breimh said that maybe I should check your journal out since you rescue native animals ad live in an area prone to large hopping marsupials.
