Can an IE guru tell me how to make IE see the USB satellite modem so I can use it for web-work? At the moment IE just gives me a "page cannot be displayed" error.

Two possibilities here:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Setup

Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> LAN Settings button

Cool beans :-) That's usually what I run into with IE. The wizard is the quick fix.

Always do for almost everything, but sometimes there is a need to use IE. Using Firefox doesn't solve the problem of IE not connecting, so a big THWAP on your nose.
