Usually when I'm told I have to pick up a baby tawney frogmouth, they look like this:

They're not really babies, they're just juveniles. Today I was asked to pick up a baby frogmouth, and when I saw her I shouted "It's a baby!" Everyone in the vet's waiting room looked at me. "It's a baby!" I said again. Instead of the usual golden eyes she has little black beads, and a MOUTH.

IT'S A BABY FROGMOUTH!

Did you know that they actually did research on baby animals that proved that the 'cuteness' factor is in fact a survival thingy? Apparently even in the wild, cute babies get more love, attention, care, and food from adult animals.

It's not just cute anymore - it's survival of the cutest!

Those are some weird-lookin' birds. The baby reminds me of a tribble, its voraciousness revealed.

Awwww...kyoot!

They've got a pair of (adult) tawny frogmouths at the LA Zoo who have lived there for many years. Or maybe it's a succession of them - how long do they live, anyway? Of course during zoo operating hours, what you see is two untidy piles of grey feathers perched on a branch.

Vicky was running an Aussie character in one of the online Hogwarts rpgs, so hers had a tawny frogmouth instead of an owl. Reactions varied between "what?" and "COOL!" depending on the players' origins. :)

In the wild they look like the grey end of a brocken branch. They don't move at all.

I'd love to see a frogmouth in a Potter story. 8)

Wasn't a story so much as an on-line roleplaying game. It seems to have brought much amusement.

There are some advantages to cool rainy weather - I dropped by the zoo yesterday and one of the snowy leopards was out prowling around the enclosure instead of curled up behind a rock in their usual daytime style. There was a toucan a few enclosures away sounding off like mad, and the cat was obviously trying to figure out how to get past the wire and get at the noisy neighbor (though whether it wanted to eat it or just get it to shut UP was a good question.)
