Can a United Statian describe a Dutch Oven to me please?

it's a big heavy iron thingy used for baking while camping. 95% of campers will make something in a Dutch oven once, just to prove they can, then decide it's far too heavy to lug around and never use it again. We always preferred the 'biscuit on a stick' method of baking while camping since it didn't require you carry this heavy piece of cooking gear.

I grew up with a dutch oven, and though my mom was a tough and rugged camper (they're not too heavy the way she grew up with them, carting them in a vehicle or tied on a horse's saddle around the backwoods of northeastern California), in our childhood we only used them for cooking saucy or otherwise messy things in the oven, or for starting on the stovetop and moving to the oven. They're great for pot roasts.
