Query

Can a United Statian describe a Dutch Oven to me please?

And I might tell you what a dutch oven is over here.

Why the interest in Dutch Ovens?

The bloke who draws Schlock Mercinary talked about cooking pancakes in a dutch oven.

I *might* use an old iron dutch oven for damper, if I didn't want ashes at all. . . .

But pancakes?

No.

Once again this Australian regrets her sheltered upbringing...

dutch oven - farting under the bed cover blankets and pulling the covers over someone else's head

Hmmm, seems like a variation of playing turtle.

Ack!

No wonder the reference gave you the giggles.

it's a big heavy iron thingy used for baking while camping. 95% of campers will make something in a Dutch oven once, just to prove they can, then decide it's far too heavy to lug around and never use it again. We always preferred the 'biscuit on a stick' method of baking while camping since it didn't require you carry this heavy piece of cooking gear.

I grew up with a dutch oven, and though my mom was a tough and rugged camper (they're not too heavy the way she grew up with them, carting them in a vehicle or tied on a horse's saddle around the backwoods of northeastern California), in our childhood we only used them for cooking saucy or otherwise messy things in the oven, or for starting on the stovetop and moving to the oven. They're great for pot roasts.

Coming in late, but have a look here (http://ww1.williams-sonoma.com/sch/kwd.cfm?words=Dutch%20oven&src=hme&fromheader=&action=KWD) for examples.

coming in even later...

...and making apologies if this is screechingly obvious, but: perhaps the pancakes to which the writer was referring were German pancakes, aka Dutch Babies? (Don't ask me - I didn't name 'em, I've just eaten 'em.) See this recipe here (http://whatscookingamerica.net/Eggs/GermanPancake.htm) for details.
