I don't normally remember dreams, but last night I had some doozies. Maybe it was the sound of the night-long rain strom that disturbed me. It's such a rare sound in these parts.

1- And audio dream. No pictures in this one. I don't mean it was black or dark or just a big empty. I mean there was no images at all, like i was blind. I was in a big crowd of people all talking at once to create that pink noise a large crowd of people makes. Then it all stopped instantly and one voice (sex indeterminant) said my name, very clearly. "Dennis." I woke instantly, feeling creeped out and thinking "bloody hell."

2- Walking in the bush, on a narrow track. Then I'm driving along a gravel road, although how I got into the car I don't know. Suddenly I'm in the car with some German back-packers, taking them to a Youth Hostel just up the road. The road was just a generic gravel road through farmland. I have no idea where it was, but in the dream I knew the area well. The we were in the YHA, avoiding all the unnecessary parking the car/unpacking/signing in. Everyone in the building were all crowded into the tiny laundry and trying to back away from a brown snake (a rather venomous species found all over eastern Aus.) Everyone was screaming and stamping their feet while I was trying to tell them to stop doing that as it upsets the snake. One of the pack-packers from my car said "Den's an animal rescuer!" The crowd parted and the snake charged at me and bit me on the calf, about half way between my right knee and ankle.

It was so realistic I was out of bed and had the light on. I examined my leg for the bites while thinking "Don't panic! Constrictive bandage! Get the constrictive bandage! Then dial 000! 000 not 911! Don't get confused!" until I realised that I was surprisingly unbitten and not in a YHA. Then the panic stoped and I thought "bloody hell."

3- All my teeth fell out. Well, not so much fell out as crumbled into gravel, leaving me with a mouth full of grit I had difficulty spitting out. I woke trying to spit out the sand and had to actually rinse my mouth out with water before I was happy there wasn't any sand left. And my teeth were still there.

4- On the floor of my toilet was a cage containing a starving bat and a rat that had died of starvation long ago. The rat was well mummified, and I remembered it was a wild one that got into the cage by accident. The bat (unknown species) was emaciated and reaching through the bars, trying to drink some water on the floor. When I picked it up it drank heaps from the tap in the sink, and I tried to feed it meal worms but I know it was hopeless. Then I woke, thinking "bloody hell," again.

Memo to subconscious: I don't understand post-modern interpretive dance. If you have something to tell me just sent me a plain-text email so I'll know what you mean.

Hmmn...half-arsed, off the top of my head, worth what you paid for it, warranty void in South Australia dream analysis...

1) Getting your attention.

2) You're not perfect, you're not invulnerable, you can make mistakes.

3) Aging? Feeling a bit mortal lately? Or maybe loss of communication...been trying to talk to someone who isn't listening?

4) Similar to (2), but more "you can't always save others" rather than "you can't always protect yourself".

What's been stressing you out lately to bring these on?

On #1 and #3, you sure you didn't swap heads with me last night? :P

While I've never had a sound only dream, it sounds like the kind of weirdness I would get in a dream o.o

I get falling out teeth all the time, those really really really suck.

Youch on #2! I one dreamed about bugs with big things the size of carpenters staples for pinchers and they would stab you. I woke up after one got me in the hand and my hand still hurt for a few seconds after I got up, but stopped once I got into the bathroom and got water on it. Very weird.

Never had one like #4 and I hope I never do *hugs*

I'm a firm believer that dreams are collections of utter nonsense that are occasionally driven by an emotional state of mind.

If you're worried, you'll have a worried dream.

If you're happy, you'll have a happy dream.

Sounds to me like you were disturbed by the change in noise. The mind gets used to sounds, and when those sounds change, it signals danger.

That's why people get nervous when birds stop singing. When the birds stop singing, it means: "Something BIG is coming this way."

Storms can do that too because they rob you of your ability to locate and differentiate sounds. If you're out in a constantly blowing wind, you can't hear very well. You won't be able to hear the Tiger sneaking up on you. Your body then goes to a heightened state of anxiety.

Hope you manage to get some better rest tomorrow! :)

I get 3 regularly enough that, when my teeth start crumbling in the dream, I think "Oh no, this time it isn't a dream!"

Irritating as heck. I've heard that it's caused by tooth grinding, but I don't know if there is any truth to that.

The first time I ever encountered serious hallucinogens, I remembered hearing about how people using stimulant drugs tended to chew gum to stop themselves grinding their teeth. We didn't have any gum, but we did have a packet of potato chips...and, in my somewhat confused state, I became convinced that the residue of the chips stuck in my teeth was actually bits of tooth being ground away 'cos I didn't have any gum...

I spent a significant portion of the next eight hours with my entire hand shoved into my mouth, checking that I still had some teeth left.

Don't have much to say about your dreams, except for...bloody hell!... Hehe... But about the losing-one's-teeth dreams. Those are characteristic of people experiencing overwhelming conditions in their lives. Are you feeling a bit pressured or out-of-control of the goings on in your life?

I tend to have those dreams when life just gets to be too much.

A question though...pink noise?

I'm at the end of semester, with exams looming in about 3 weeks. That may be the stress.

Pink noise is the natural ambient sound you find in nature: waterfalls, wind, etc. It's different from white noise. The colours of noise. (http://www.ptpart.co.uk/colors.htm) (the Orange Noise entry is my favourite.)

Yeah, I'd say that's definitely an onset of stress. :P Anymore tooth-losing dreams of late?

Thanks for the link on the noise...most of it went right over my head, but it was an interesting read, nonetheless, and I intend to do some more reading up on it. ^_^

Be well!

Dude. That's like a hit parade of some of my worst nightmares--teeth falling out, starving animals, and the not-quite-as-bad-but-still-obnoxious snakebite dream.

But I've never had 'em all in one night! Damn!

The starving animal one was a new one on me. I've had the others before, but never all in one night.

I am, as you would expect, a little tired. It's an early night for me.
