It's the browser's best shot at parsing non-standard font color codes - when you put your name or any other text between those tags, the browser expects to see a code.

See, you can do it with non-name words, too:








It works in Explorer and old Netscape, but not so well in Mozilla and not at all, from what I understand, in Opera. (If you get "huh?" comments from people, they probably have a standards-compliant browser.)

Firefox shows the colours on my journal page, but on my friends list and in the comments it shows up black.

It's not enough to make me stop preferring Firefox over IE.
