OOooo ... I remember reading / hearing somewhere a theory about 'space sailing' based on 'light sails'... what a positively delicious idea... I must search out more information on this!

they're called solar sails. they're neat!

tons of stuff online about them. here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/exploration/futurespaceflight/solarsails.shtml) is just one article. :)

Oh!! thank you.... it really is a neat, and terribly romantic idea isn't it? I'm feeling terribly inspired now :) *grins* Thanks again for the link.

Oh wow.....
Now all I have to do is turn all this inspiration into a story worthy of such beautiful and dreamy works :)

The second one is already part of a story.

Neat!

The overlapping sails make it look like the exoskeletal leg of a fly. :)

I've always wondered what a good solar sail might look like - and now I know. Thanks, Den!

Excellent! And I believe I've seen that ship before, or some aspect of it. Hmmm...

Something about the configuration is just too familiar. Aha! A da Vinci drawing, no?

I wasn't really thinking of da Vinci, but I expect he drew one like it. I was thinking more of Roger Dean with some Terry Pratchett thrown in.
