Clisby Ninature Machines (http://www.clisby.com.au/LatheMetal.html) in SA make little lathes. I'll be investing in one as soon as I can afford it.

What about Unimat?

When I was growing up, I recall my dad having a Unimat lathe, which was small and designed to handle metals. It could also do a bunch of other things. It looks like the original Unimat company is gone, but it appears the name and the product are still around. I found a German site from the manufacturer, and a US reseller who claims on having good prices.

If I could afford one, I'd get it....assuming it lives up to the Unimat reputation.

That's a neat little lathe. I've been looking at the one that Jaycar was selling, but so far I've managed to convince myself that I didn't need to spend $899 on a lathe that I'd only use occasionally. On the other hand, Clisby's CML 500 lathe (or maybe the longer bed CML 1000 model) would probably be all I'd need for the small plastic/brass/alloy pieces I often want to make, and the price is tempting.

for $760ish Clisby will sell a minilathe and a milling rig/drill press.

I know. That combination is very tempting.
