They bite off anything that hinders wing movement, and if they are unable to exercise their flapping muscles of an extended time they lose the ability to fly, so even if the wing heals they might still never fly.
You mightn't have been able to save this critter, but think of all the others you have rehabbed that, left to the tender mercies of nature and less-clued-in humans, would have been toast.
I'm very sad that this important part of your job has to exist, and for you when you have to do it, but I'm glad it's done by someone who really cares about the animals.
