Don't hold a hungry bat in the hand that has worm guts on the fingers, or blood will be spilled

But it's a good kind of pain ;-) No Lyssavirus in this species I hope?

Go Batty! :)

We don't seem to have lyssa in this area. I still have to treat the bats like they have it, but as yet all the suspect bats tested have been negative.

I'm usually very careful, but a moment's lack of care is all it takes for the bat to go the fang.

Batty,

Are you practicing for rehabbing vampire bats in the future...? ;)

I've mentioned elsewhere how much I'd like to care for vampires. 8) We don't have them here but we do have ghost bats (http://www.amonline.net.au/bats/records/bat14.htm) which are the next best thing. I'd have to move to the tropics to handle those.

Ghost Bats!

Hmm! "Australia's only carnivorous bat"?

I didn't know *any* bats were carnivores. Neat! :)

Er, yeah. It's easy to forget: Prepare food, grab hungry bat in tent, look away to get first meal worm... ouch. It only takes a moment of inattention.

Words to live by.

I take it that rabies is not an issue?

Re:

Not rabies, but a related disease called lyssavirus. It's not as virulent as rabies and it's prevented or cured by rabies vaccines as long as you treat it before the major symptoms show. Lussa is found in bats all over the world but only here do we not have to worry about rabies.

No rabies in Australia. How cool is that? 8)

Bat: FOOD!

*CHOMP*

"What the? You mean that's not the mealworm equivalent of a footlong sandwich?! But it had such a lovely smell?......"

:D

I guess the human finger does look edible under certain conditions.......
