Road trip photos

Woomera, Coober Pedy

Island Lake. The white surface is a crust of salt.

Sunrise in the Woomera Prohibited Zone.

Miles and miles of bugger all, looking due west at Ingmar. Over the horizon in Western Australia, about 1000km away.

Coober Pedy

The chimneys sticking out of the ground are air vents for the houses. There are 3 houses in the foreground.

One of the Coober Pedy opal fields.

Another opal field.

Home made machinery. A washer/shaker/sorter/bucket conveyer, or something from Mad Max.

Heehee. And the bus is *not* pink, it's "lavendar!"

What's that white object in the middle of the opal field picture (Coober Pedy)? I'm guessing it isn't a musroom or a fungus due to the arid soil;).

It's the bottom of a plastic drum getting UV'd to death.

It's funny; some people would look at those scenes and say "Ew. What a barren, lifeless place." But I think it looks like our Southern California Desert, of which I'm so fond...

I love those underground houses. Seems to me I saw a nice National Geographic spread on them in the late 1960's. I'd love to live there; I'd build a small observatory dome at ground level and have blessed unobstructed viewing nights with my dust-gathering telescope. Oh, and I'd be able to see the Southern Cross, which of course I can't see from the NA continent.
