Royal Australian Mint announces the release of the new holographic $1 coin.

They will be available in the proof sets. I wonder if they'll hit circulation with the standard $1 coins.

I've always been curious: how many Australians have actually *seen* a kangaroo (other than in a zoo)? I mean, much of the world thinks Americans all ride horses and surf, and have seen buffalo on a regular basis. The world also seems to think that every Australian vacations or lives in the outback. Nope. Of course, I have done all of those save visiting Australia (came close to a paid business trip to Queensland once), but what can I say?

BTW, other than "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," one of my favorite Australian movies is "Walkabout." Marvelous scenery of both Sydney and some of the outback. Ever see it?

80% of us live in urban areas. I doubt many Aussies have seen a 'roo outside a zoo. Most of us go on holidays at the beach, barrier reef or overseas. The Interior is always the dream destination that is never reached.

"Walkabout" was required reading in English and the teacher showed us the movie in class.

If you want to see more of The Outback, look for "Ricky And Pete" which will make you laugh, and "Rabbit Proof Fence" which will make you angry.
